Buildings must reduce operational energy demand while providing healthy indoor environments and adequate acoustic comfort. Yet many conventional insulation and sound-absorption products rely on fossil-based or energy-intensive materials, may irritate installers, are difficult to reuse or recycle, and become construction waste at end of life. At the same time, coarse sheep wool is frequently undervalued or discarded in producing regions. AbrigA┬о addresses these connected challenges by transforming a renewable regional fibre into technically validated thermal-insulation and acoustic-conditioning materials for energy-efficient, comfortable and circular buildings.
Our Solution:
AbrigA┬о develops construction materials made from sheep wool. Its commercially validated product is a flexible thermal and acoustic insulation blanket supplied in compressed 20 m┬▓ rolls, 16 m long, 1.25 m wide and 50 mm thick. It is cut with scissors or by hand and friction-fitted between steel- or timber-frame studs, roofs, ceilings and partitions. Its tested thermal conductivity is ╬╗ = 0.0457 W/m┬╖K at approximately 14.5 kg/m┬│. Through Ac├║sticA, the same fibrous material is configured for interior sound absorption and acoustic comfort. Wool blankets of 35 mm and 70 mm have been characterized in a reverberation chamber under IRAM 4065:2019, equivalent to ISO 354:2003. Wooden-framed acoustic panel prototypes are currently undergoing product-level testing.
How it works:
AbrigA┬о is innovative because it turns an underused renewable fibre into a circular platform of construction materials that contributes to the decarbonization of buildings throughout their life cycle. Sheep wool stores biogenic carbon and is transformed into durable thermal-insulation and acoustic-conditioning solutions through a manufacturing process designed to generate no waste. The materials are reusable, recyclable and biodegradable, supporting circularity from raw-material sourcing to end of life. The same fibre platform can be adapted to different building applications, extending its useful value.
